Four disciplines, one quiet system.

Architecture, interiors, objects, and strategy are treated as connected parts of the same work — each one shaping how the space is planned, detailed, and lived in.

Rigour, from first sketch to final fix.

A four-stage process led by the same senior team, from first visit to handover. Every drawing is tested, coordinated, and resolved before it leaves the studio.

The Difference / 05

A calmer path to resolved work

A clearer process, closer attention, and fewer moments where the work loses its intent.

A typical practice

  • Hands the work to junior staff after the pitch.
  • Optimises for the render, not the finished build.
  • Treats the site as a blank slate.
  • Steps back once planning is granted.
  • Repeats a single recognisable house style.
  • Treats cost certainty as an afterthought.

Working with Vellum

  • A principal stays close to every project.
  • Details are drawn for how the space will actually be built.
  • Every decision begins with the site, its light, and its history.
  • We stay close through construction and handover.
  • Each project is shaped around its brief, not a house style.
  • Budget, programme, and scope are held from day one.

Recognition / 07

Built with restraint. Recognized with care.

Selected mentions, awards, and shortlists from projects shaped through restraint, material clarity, and careful construction.

May 2025

RIBA Regional Award — Datum House

Datum House was recognised for the precision of its section, its restrained coastal material palette, and a quiet relationship between concrete, stone, glazing, and sea light.

Feb 2025

Dezeen Awards — Workplace Shortlist

Alex Atelier was shortlisted for its careful adaptive reuse — preserving the weight of the existing masonry while introducing a lighter layer of worktables, models, and north-facing light.

Nov 2024

Civic Trust Award — North Pavilion

North Pavilion was honoured for its contribution to public life: a single calm concrete room framing a garden, a reflecting pool, and a quieter pause within the park.

Sep 2024

AJ Retrofit Award — Finalist

A compact reuse project was selected for its disciplined joinery, reduced material palette, and the way old structure and new occupation remain legible within the same room.

Client Notes / 08

Spaces remembered after handover

Reflections from clients and collaborators who trusted us with homes, public rooms, and long construction processes.

Private residence Datum House

They understood the site better than we did.

They spent two days walking the land before drawing anything. The house now belongs exactly where it sits — we cannot imagine it anywhere else.

Cultural client Meridian Trust

They protected the idea to the last detail.

From competition sketch to handover, the original idea survived intact — and quietly improved along the way.

Principles / 08

The rules behind the restraint.

A few working principles guide every commission, from the first site walk to the final junction, so the finished space feels calm, resolved, and built to last.

01

Site First

We design from the ground and its history outward, never from a house style inward.

  • Orientation, light, and landscape set the first rules.
  • Existing constraints are treated as design material.
  • Nothing is added without belonging to the place.
02

Resolved to the Detail

Every junction is drawn, tested, and clarified so the building stays calm where it matters most.

  • Key junctions are resolved before site pressure begins.
  • Material transitions are drawn, not guessed.
  • Small decisions are given enough time to settle.
03

One Team Throughout

The people who shape the work at the beginning stay close through drawings, coordination, and construction.

  • Senior attention remains present across every stage.
  • Knowledge is carried forward instead of handed off.
  • Clients know who is responsible for each decision.
04

Built to Endure

Materials and details are chosen for how they age, weather, repair, and continue to feel settled over time.

  • Durability is considered before surface effect.
  • Maintenance is designed into the architecture.
  • The palette is reduced so the building can age quietly.
Questions / 10

Clear answers, before we begin.

Do you take on small or single-room projects?

Yes. Alongside whole buildings we take on focused interior and extension projects — the brief just needs to be clear and the ambition real. Scale matters far less to us than care.

How long does a project usually take?

A typical house runs fourteen to twenty months from first sketch to completion; larger or planning-sensitive schemes take longer. We set out a realistic programme during feasibility so there are no surprises.

Do you work outside Spain and Denmark?

Often. We run projects across Europe from our two studios — travelling for key site stages and coordinating the rest closely over calls, models, and shared drawings.

Can you work with our engineer and contractor?

Gladly. We coordinate closely with consultants and builders, and can recommend trusted teams where you don't already have them in place.

How do we start?

Send a short note about the site and the brief. We'll arrange a call, visit if it's close, and follow up with a clear proposal and fee. No obligation, no jargon.

Start the conversation

Let’s begin on site.

Tell us where the project is, what you are hoping to make, and what needs to be understood first. We will come back with a clear next step.
